You Can't Predict Birth... But You Can Prepare

By Lisa Hanna, Midwife & KG Hypnobirthing Teacher, Castlewellan, Co.Down, Northern Ireland

You can't control birth... and that's okay.

One of the biggest fears I hear from pregnant women is:

"What if my birth doesn't go to plan?"

If you've ever had that thought, you're not alone, we can all hope and dream for our ideal birth but in reality, sometimes it doesn't go to plan.

As an experienced midwife, I've supported women through beautiful straightforward births, long induced labours, water births, emergency situations and planned caesarean births.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's this...

You can't predict birth. But you can prepare.

Preparation can completely change how you experience your birth, whatever path it takes.

Why does birth feel so unpredictable?

Each pregnancy and birth are unique to each woman and baby, and there are many variable factors impacted by physiology and hospital guidelines that make birth unpredictable.

I would be a millionaire if I could predict how your birth would unfold, the amount of times I have been asked "will it take much longer?" or "do you think I will have a normal delivery?" The honest answer is I cant say for sure.

No one can promise how your birth will happen, but there are many things you can prepare for to try to achieve the birth you want and to prepare for a birth that doesn't go to plan.

Preparation often helps women feel calmer, more confident and better able to make informed decisions during labour. Preparation improves birth outcomes, reduces birth trauma, improves postnatal recovery.

Birth preparation isn't about creating the perfect birth plan

Many people think preparing for birth means writing a detailed birth plan and hoping everything goes exactly as imagined.

But that's not really what birth preparation is.

A birth plan is useful, however it should be flexible, plan A, B and C.

It's there to help you think about your preferences in advance, understand your options and communicate what's important to you to both your birth partner and your maternity care team.

When plans need to change, having knowledge helps you adapt rather than panic.

What does good birth preparation look like?

Good birth preparation isn't about memorising every possible birth scenario or feel like you are the midwife, its about understanding what's happening, feeling confident in your choices and knowing how to adapt.

My midwife led birth preparation face to face courses are based in Newcastle and Castlewellan areas, Co.Down Northern Ireland, will help prepare you and your birth partner to understand. My course also has the added benefit of teaching you KG Hypnobirth relaxation techniques to help you feel calm, release fears and feel in control. I will teach you...

✔️ How labour normally begins

✔️ What contractions are doing through each stage of labour (there are 3 stages)

✔️ How hormones influence labour and how you can control these hormones

✔️ KG Hypnobirth techniques to stay calm, relaxed and feel in control

✔️ Your pain relief options, advantages, disadvantages and timing to ensure you get what you want

✔️ Birth positions to help your baby navigate their way into the world

✔️ When interventions may be recommended, what your options are

✔️ How your birth partner can support you, advocate for you, work as a team

✔️ How to make informed decisions if your birth changes direction

I also don't forget about you after the session, I provide ongoing online support and love to hear how your birth story unfolds

What does the evidence say?

Research consistently shows that women who feel informed, involved in decision-making and supported throughout labour are more likely to describe their birth as a positive experience, regardless of how their baby is born.

The World Health Organization recognises that a positive childbirth experience is about more than the mode of birth. It includes feeling respected, supported and involved in decisions.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) also recommends shared decision-making throughout pregnancy and labour so that women understand their choices and can make informed decisions.

What difference does hypnobirthing make to birth preparation?

One of the biggest myths I hear is...

"Hypnobirthing only works if you have a natural birth."

That simply isn't true. Hypnobirthing is a full antenatal education programme with the added benefit which will help to change your mindset, release fears, and increase your confidence in your ability to birth your baby.

Yes, breathing techniques are part of hypnobirthing but these can be used alongside other pain relief options too.

Hypnobirthing is not simply about "breathing your baby out".

It's about preparing for birth, learning how your body works, understanding your options.

Knowing how to stay calm and control your nervous system, to respond to the intensity of birth and surrender to it rather than tensing up and working against what your body is trying to do.

Feeling confident to ask questions throughout your pregnancy and delivery.

Working with your birth team, making joint decisions that are right for you

These skills can help whether you have:

• A spontaneous labour

• An induction

• An assisted birth

• A planned caesarean birth

• An unexpected caesarean birth

Confidence changes everything

Imagine walking into labour feeling...

birth needs to be understood not feared

✨ Calm instead of frightened.

✨ Informed instead of overwhelmed.

✨ Confident instead of doubting yourself.

✨ Supported instead of alone.

Birth may still surprise you.

But you'll know how to respond.

You'll understand what's happening.

You'll feel able to make decisions that are right for you and your baby.

One thing I've learned as a midwife

After years supporting women through labour, I understand women need to be heard, your instinct should never be underestimated but I have also I've witnessed,

The women who coped best weren't always the ones whose birth went exactly to plan.

They were the women who felt prepared.

Prepared to understand.

Prepared to adapt.

Prepared to ask questions.

Prepared to trust themselves.

That preparation often made all the difference, it avoids the fear, pain, tension cycle that delays birth and makes it more traumatic and painful.

Why choose a midwife-led hypnobirthing course?

There are lots of birth preparation courses available.

What makes mine different is that I combine evidence-based hypnobirthing with years of practical experience working as a midwife. I don't promise the perfect birth. I prepare you for real birth.

You'll leave understanding:

✔️ Labour

✔️ Your choices

✔️ Pain relief

✔️ Birth hormones

✔️ Birth partner support

✔️ What happens if plans change

Most importantly...

You'll leave feeling more confident than when you arrived, with a tool kit to use in labour to help you focus, stay calm, feel in control and welcome your baby into the world calmly.
