4 Reasons on Why and When When To Book Antenatal Hypnobirth Prep Classes?

When Should You Book Hypnobirthing? Why Booking Early Matters
If you're pregnant and considering hypnobirthing, you may be wondering when is the best time to book a hypnobirthing course?
My advice as a qualified Midwife and Health Visitor is simple: don't leave it until the last minute. I often receive calls from people late in their pregnancy, as their due date approaches and fears set in and recently, I've had to turn people away simply because I didn't have any availability when they were ready to book.
Hypnobirthing is suitable from around 24 weeks of pregnancy, and starting earlier gives you more time to learn, practice and become familiar with the techniques before your baby arrives. Research states this is when hypnobirthing becomes more effective.
At Pregnancy Birth Beyond, I offer a one day, face to face, midwife-led hypnobirthing and birth preparation class in Castlewellan, County Down, Northern Ireland, preparing you for ALL types of birth with the added calming effect of hypnobirthing. I provide monthly group courses and personalised 1-to-1 sessions.
So if antenatal birth prep and hypnobirthing is something you'd like to do, booking early really can make a difference.
When should I start hypnobirthing?
I recommend starting from around 24 weeks of pregnancy.
There isn't a magic week when you have to start, and you can still benefit from hypnobirthing later in pregnancy. However, the earlier you begin, the more opportunity you have to practice the techniques and incorporate them into your pregnancy.
Hypnobirthing combines relaxation, breathing, visualisation and self-hypnosis techniques. The NHS and Royal College of Midwives describes hypnobirthing as a way of helping you feel more confident and calm and potentially more in control during labour. It can also be used alongside pain relief and other medical interventions.
4 Reasons Why I Recommend Booking Your Hypnobirthing Course Early With Me
1) The techniques are skills, and like any skill, practice matters.
Starting around 24–30 weeks gives you plenty of time to practice your breathing and relaxation techniques at home, listen to your relaxation audios and become familiar with the tools you can use during labour.
You aren't simply learning hypnobirthing for one day and then forgetting about it until you go into labour, you have homework to do after the class, taking 10 mins a day for some relaxation for you and your baby, to connect and also release any fears you have about birth. This is where the magic happens!
The aim is to make these techniques familiar enough that you can draw on them when you need them during your labour and birth.
2) Availability.
I still work within the NHS, I would love to be able to offer you more classes but as a busy mum of 3, providing baby massage classes along with antenatal hypnobirth classes my time is limited.
My group hypnobirthing classes run monthly, so there are regular opportunities to join a course.
However, spaces are limited because I keep the groups small to ensure that everyone feels relaxed, gets the support and has an opportunity to ask questions that they need.
I also offer private 1-to-1 hypnobirthing sessions, but these tend to book particularly quickly because I have fewer individual appointments available.
Recently, I've had to turn people away because I simply didn't have a suitable date available.
I would much rather you book early, secure your place and then have plenty of time to prepare than reach the final weeks of pregnancy and discover that the course date you want is already full.
You don't need to book hypnobirthing the moment you find out you're pregnant (although some people do) – but once you have your 20 wk scan and know all is well, we need to have a chat to arrange your 1-1 or you can go ahead and book a group course.
3) Midwife-led Hypnobirthing Course
One of the things that makes Pregnancy.Birth.Beyond different is that your hypnobirthing preparation is led by an experienced Midwife and Health Visitor.
For 18 years, I've worked as a midwife with women and families throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and I am currently working as a Health Visitor, during this postnatal period, and I've seen first-hand how birth experinces influence your recovery and connection with your baby.
I understand that birth doesn't always follow the plan, I don't promise you a pain free, 'breath your baby out' style hypnobirth class.
Birth is unpredictable. Preparation doesn't have to be.
My aim is to help you understand your options, reduce fear, develop practical coping strategies and help you feel confident making informed decisions throughout your birth.
Whether you're planning a physiological birth, induction, epidural or caesarean, you can still benefit from good birth preparation.

I genuinely care about you, I wont forget about you on the day, I am always available to help you make any decisions and guide you through the process and I love to hear your birth story 💕
4)Sometimes babies arrive early!

This is particularly important because babies don't always follow our carefully planned timelines!
One of my recent clients attended my hypnobirthing course expecting to have much more time before meeting her baby.
Instead, she went into labour and gave birth just one week after attending the course – at only 34 weeks pregnant. And there was another unexpected twist. Her baby was breech.
So she had the double surprise of a much earlier-than-expected birth and a breech presentation.
Despite this, she went on to have a vaginal birth.
Her experience is such a lovely reminder that birth doesn't always happen according to the plan we imagined. It is also one of the reasons I encourage women not to leave birth preparation until the very end of pregnancy.
You simply don't know when your baby is going to decide that it's time.

Common Questions
What happens if my baby comes early and I can't attend?
I understand that booking something during pregnancy can feel like a risk when you don't know exactly what the next few months will bring.
That's why if you book with me and are unable to attend because of an extenuating circumstance such as premature labour, I will provide you with a full refund.
I want you to feel confident booking your birth preparation early without worrying that you will lose your money if something completely unexpected happens.
What happens if I can no longer attend that date?
If you can't attend I can always transfer you into another group session or arrange a 1-1 at a time and date that does suit. Additional payment would be needed if changing from a group to 1-1 session.
What if I book and then find out I'm having an Induction Of Labour or elective caesarean?
This is another really common concern.
You may book a hypnobirthing course because you're planning a vaginal birth and then, as your pregnancy progresses, find out that you will be having an elective caesarean section or induction of labour.
Does that mean your hypnobirthing preparation has been wasted?
Absolutely not.
Hypnobirthing is not just about preparing for a vaginal birth.
The breathing, relaxation, visualisation and mindset techniques can still be incredibly useful when preparing for a planned caesarean birth or induction of labour.
You may also go into labour before your planned caesarean date, so understanding the signs and stages of labour and knowing how to stay calm can still be valuable.
Most importantly, birth preparation can help you feel informed, calm and in control, even when your birth takes a different path from the one you originally imagined.
I will teach you about the BRAIN strategy to have useful conversations with your maternity team and help you make choices that are right for you.
The NHS also recognises that hypnobirthing can be used alongside medical interventions and that it can help you feel more in control if things don't go according to plan.
If your circumstances change and you are now planning an elective caesarean, please contact me. We can discuss your individual circumstances and whether the course remains appropriate for you.
Group hypnobirthing or 1-to-1?
I offer two main options at Pregnancy.Birth.Beyond.
Group hypnobirthing courses
My group hypnobirthing courses run monthly and are a lovely option if you enjoy learning alongside other expectant parents. These are always good fun and lots of conversations are generated throughout the day. I love getting questions as it helps to ensure you get the most out of the class.
The course is a full day of realistic birth preparation, covering labour, birth, relaxation and breathing techniques, pain relief, interventions, birth partner support and what to do when birth doesn't go according to plan.
If you wish you will be added into a group WhatsApp where further support throughout your pregnancy can occur, new parent friendships develop.

1-to-1 hypnobirthing
My private 1-to-1 hypnobirthing course is tailored specifically to you and your circumstances.
This can be particularly useful if you have specific concerns about birth, a previous difficult birth experience, a particular birth plan you want to explore, or simply prefer a private learning environment.
Because I only have a limited number of 1-to-1 appointments available, these spaces can book quickly.

Don't Miss Out, You can't predict birth – but you can prepare for it.
Perhaps the biggest misconception about hypnobirthing is that it's about achieving a particular type of birth.
For me, it's about something much more important.
It's about helping you feel calm, informed, confident and prepared, whatever your birth looks like.
Starting from around 24 weeks gives you time to practice and develop confidence in the techniques.
Booking early gives you the best chance of securing the date that works for you.
And if your circumstances change along the way, we can adapt your preparation too.
So if you're currently around 24 weeks pregnant, or approaching that stage, now is a great time to book your birth preparation.
If you are further along in your pregnancy and my group session dates don't suit you, give me a call or message me to find out what 1-1 availability I have.
